Legacy MEI – DSP Motion Controllers
DLPCI

DSP series motion controller cards were first introduced in 1989. Upon their introduction, the MEI boards became an instant success allowing customers to achieve complex motion and I/O tasks on various kinds of machines. After 25 years, these cards are still being used successfully by customers all around the world which speaks volume of their reliability and longevity.

Unfortunately, various components used to assemble the DSP cards have well surpassed their end-of-life cycle and Kollmorgen (who acquired MEI) has regrettably announced that they will discontinue manufacturing these boards.

Apart from being the exclusive reseller for these controllers and providing technical support, RSI has also been responsible for all DSP series controller repair.  Our goal is to keep serving customers beyond the EOL of DSP cards. RSI will continue to maintain a limited supply of the EOL components to allow us to make repairs in the future.

RSI can offer several upgrade paths utilizing the latest technology which incorporates all digital networks such as SynqNet and EtherCAT.  Utilizing RSI’s RapidCode API and tools such as our DSP-to-Digital translator, we can assist with the migration of your old code to our new hardware as well as our software based motion control solution that does not require hardware.

Standalone AC Servo Drives

Standalone AC Servo drives are designed to be extremely versatile supporting multiple feedback types as well as auxiliary feedback from dual loop positioning, built in general purpose I/O and safe torque off, usually includes internal regen capability, and many more standard features.

Output Power ranges anywhere from 1kW up to 65kW with wide input voltage ranges from 110 to 480VAC . Continuous output current ranges from 3A all the way up to 100A.

Well suited for control cabinet installations as they are not typically environmentally protected.

Decentralized Drive Blurb

Decentralized Servo Drives

This drive technology is designed to be installed near the motors reducing cabling requirements and simplifying the controls cabinet. The DC power and fieldbus run in a single hybrid cable that is only 11mm in diameter.

The central power supply can accommodate 208VAC to 480VAC. Each drive can output either 3A or 6A continuous current.

Well suited for installation on machine as the enclosure is IP67 rated and vibration certified.

This drive technology has the smallest footprint on the market and can also be cost effective. They are great for tight spaces or custom integrated projects. They generally support most of the features of standalone AC drives but by centralizing the power supply they also have cost advantages.

Output power ranges anywhere from 240W up to 2kW with input voltages of 6VDC to 200VDC. Continuous output current ranges from 3.0A up to 25A.

PCB drives are small enough to be installed anywhere. They can be integrated into a custom enclosure or on a custom mounting card inside a controls cabinet.

This drive technology is very cost effective because the drive commutates on halls only, which is good for velocity control. The control signals are typically digital or analog IO.

These controllers typically accept 120VAC input and can output from 5A to 15A continuous current.

Well suited for control cabinet installations as they are not typically environmentally protected.

Stepper Drives

This drive/motor solution is low cost and performs well in low speed applications.  They can run open or closed loop and also receive step/direction commands or can communicate via fieldbus.

Stepper drives can typically operate from 12 – 95VDC and can output from 1A to 15A continuous current.

Well suited for control cabinet installations as they are not typically environmentally protected.

Industrial IO BlurbThe robust design of the EtherCAT Box modules enables them to be used directly at the machine. Control cabinets and terminal boxes are now no longer required. The modules are fully sealed and therefore ideally prepared for wet, dirty or dusty conditions. Pre-assembled cables significantly simplify EtherCAT and signal wiring. Commissioning is optimised. In addition to pre-assembled EtherCAT, power and sensor cables, field-configurable connectors and cables are available for maximum flexibility. Depending on the application, the sensors and actuators are connected via M8 or M12 screwtype connectors or D-sub plugs.

The EtherCAT modules cover the typical range of requirements for IP 67 I/O signals: digital inputs with different filters (3.0 ms or 10 μs), digital outputs with 0.5 and 2 A output current, combination modules with freely selectable inputs or outputs, analog inputs and outputs with 16-bit resolution, thermocouple and RTD inputs, and stepper motor modules. XFC (eXtreme Fast Control) modules, including inputs with time stamp, are also available. The availability of XFC EtherCAT Box modules enables a wide range of new applications that were not possible in the past with an IP 67 module.

The majority of the EtherCAT Box modules are approved for the extended temperature range of -25 to +60 °C (storage temperature -40…+85 °C). This way, the standard IP 67 modules can also be used in extreme climates.
